Tiedeman Trophy - Anglesey - 17th Nov
Leastone boss Paul Heavey made a successful return to the Leastone 1000 cockpit last weekend, when he and Brendan O’Brien visited Anglesey for rounds 5 and 6 of the Monoposto Tiedeman Trophy. O’Brien made his second appearance of the year in his Global Services Centres Leastone, while Heavey took over Max Harts usual mount.
With Saturday testing helping both drivers get back up to speed following a long lay off, they were greeted with a damp coastal circuit come Sunday. Heavey opted to slicks, with a drying line appearing, however a light but persistent shower resulted in a 9th place start for Race 1. Brendan fared better, locking in 7th place for the first of the days two races.
A good start for Heavey vaulted him to 5th place in the opening stages. However a coolant leak meant he would have to head for the pits but luckily, it coincided with an early red flag which gave the team the opportunity to fix issue in time for the restart.
From there Heavey picked his way through the pack, eventually coming upon Brendan who was having a strong run in 5th place overall. The pair exchanged places late in the race, resulting in a 5th and 6th place overall, with Heavey taking 3rd place in MonoMoto 1000, with O’Brien taking 4th in class.
Race results for race 1 decided the grid for Race 2, and Brendan made good use of it to jump to 5th on the opening lap. The team boss did not make as much use of the grid slot as he suffered a spin at the Rocket corner, which would drop him all the way to the back of the field.
In a similar vein to Race 1, Heavey set about clawing back lost ground and made good progress in the mid part of the race. Up ahead, O’Brien lost a little ground to some of the more powerful machinery and had dropped to 6th overall.
In the closing stages of the race, Heavey had managed to reel Brendan in, and passed him for 6th overall 2 laps from home. The two crossed the line in 6th and 7th place overall, securing another 3rd and 4th place in class, rounding out a good weekend for the part timers.
That marks the end of the 2019 season for the Leastone team, one which saw the boss return to Formula Vee with a race win and also saw the emergence of young Max Hart, who not only finished runner up in his first season of UK racing but also is in the running to take Motorsport Ireland's prestigious Young Driver of the Year award.
